Very strange cataloging
3/3/11 17:28Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's "Alice on the Outside" is cataloged, in Powells and Open Library and multiple public library catalogs, with many accurate subject headings (Subject: Schools Subject: School & Education Subject: Social Situations - Prejudice & Racism Subject: Prejudices Subject: Single-parent families )
and also:
Subject: Erotic Stories
I have not read the book. From what I can glean online, Alice is curious about sex and has some frank discussions about sex, but there is no actual sex in the book (it takes place when Alice is 13 -- perhaps there is sex later in the series, but not yet.)
A few Concerned Parents would like to use that subject heading to prove that the book is somehow totally unsuitable for a preteen audience -- after all, the catalogers themselves describe it as an erotic story! But I can only think that it's, maybe... a mistake?
