The book I am reading: I finished Among Others last night and started on the next book on my American Literature Reading Project (about which more anon), Kate Chopin's The Awakening.

The book I am writing: ...Yeah, like you-all haven't already heard too much about the book I am writing.

The book I love most:
It is ridiculous to choose one. Ash: A Secret History still pushes all of my buttons in a spectatular way.

The last book I received as a gift:
For Christmas I got a book of Chinese fortunetelling for 2011 appropriate to my birth year.

The last book I gave as a gift:
To B., Kansha, Elizabeth Ando's book on Japanese veg*n cooking.

The nearest book on my desk:
Since I am at work at the reference desk, I seem to be closest to Hooked on Horror and The Merck Manual Home Health Handbook.

-George Eliot, Middlemarch
-Henry James, The Portrait of a Lady

I know Middlemarch is not American... )

-Stephen Crane, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets
-Stephen Crane, The Red Badge of Courage

-Sarah Orne Jewett, The Country of the Pointed Firs
Charming plotless vignettes about coastal rural maine. I liked the portrayal of William, who seems to have some sort of social anxiety disorder.

That'll all so far. I'm almost out of the 19th century!
