Really, nothing more needs to be said about my hospital experience than that I got there at 8:30 and got home just now.

They took my x-rays and splinted me up and sent me to the hand doctor upstairs; due to some stupid miscommunication no-one knew I was there for another hour and a half, by which point my pain had spiked again. They totally failed to give me meds - I just got a prescription for Motrin, and it had better have some great narcotics in it.

ANYWAY, the hand doctor confirms it's not just any fracture - I have a benign bone tumor that was eating away at the bone, hah, which is why my Hello Kitty handbag sufficed to break it. And I will need surgery, which I'm not even capable of thinking about right now.

If my day weren't great enough already, I dropped my cell phone and cracked the screen. Truthfully, I wanted an excuse to replace it, bu the timing is pretty bad.

One-handed typing is so not my favorite thing. But I'm better at it than expected.

Oh. Um. Gah.

Well, at least (in terms of saving face) it wasn't JUST the Hello Kitty handbag. And at least it's benign. (meep.)

Hand surgery is not the most fun thing ever in my experience. Doing it over the summer or something is best if possible, because it destroys productivity. That said, you'll get through it. *hug* Wish I could help you out somehow!

Hang in there! And I'm glad you were smart enough to GO to the hospital.

Yeah, my first reaction was YOU DID SAY BENIGN, RIGHT? and my second was "Maybe I'll live this down after all."

Luckily I've broken two other bones in the last couple years, so I had a basis of comparison to say it might be serious.

I may have to figure out if I can take a medical leave of absence - I don't know if there's any time at work I could afford to be without my right hand long-term, and summer would be worst with all the craft projects we do. I really appreciate your experience, though!

Dear god, speak of mixed blessings. What a pity you cracked your hand on Hello Kitty but if not you'd never have learned about this BONE TUMOUR you have.

Indeed, but if this bone was so frail anything at all could have cracked it, it would've happened eventually. And maybe not four days before I move.

argh. Sorry this sucks so bad for you- If there's anything I can do let me know, including help you pack this weekend... I also have about a week vacation left I have to use up this year, so if you need anyone to hang out and do stuff around the house while you recover and take lots of drugs, let me know.

If you would be able to come over Saturday night or Sunday morning to help me pack, that would be awesome - movers are coming between 1 and 3 Sunday, and I have to work Saturday. It's so nice that you would volunteer your vacation time, but I think I can handle things okay... I'm not taking any sick days except yesterday to go to the hospital. Maybe when I get this surgery thing figured out. Which could take a while because I need to find a primary care physician to get a referral to someone who can do the surgery, and then if I switch my health plan to one that sucks less it will be a pre-existing condition.

I can come over Saturday night and stay over if you want. And you should check your plan options, but most group plans (I think) don't have exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

The weird thing with vacation days at my work (and by weird I mean sucky and nonsensical) is that I have to use all my days before the end of this calendar year or they go away, and then I start January at 0 vacation days, so if you do the surgery in January or February, I wouldn't be able to take any time off.

Maybe I can work something out with our production manager, once you figure out when that's going to happen.

I dunno where you'd stay over, unless on Diana's sleeper sofa - and I think things will be under control if you can do either day, not necessairly both.

I can't have the surgery for at least 3-4 wks while my hand recovers, so it might well be Jan. or later. Anyway, it'll be a while before I know for sure. But I wouldn't expect you to use your vacation on my account- maybe I can stay with mom if my recovery's going to be really bad.
