The second time I've witnessed someone using the library tables to change a diaper.

And this question:
"Is this book appropriate for me?"
"How old are you?"
"Fourteen."

Mind you, she looked sixteen at least, and if she hadn't asked I wouldn't have said anything. But I stand by my "Oh, gee, no, I think it's probably a little old. Can I point you at our YA books?"

Dumb question: Does your branch have a changing table of any sort in the bathroom?

I only ask because with the reputation my library system has of being child-friendly, we don't have so much as enough counter space on which to change my child in the bathroom in at least two of the branches here. There isn't a lot of wiggle room on the floor, either.

I suppose I'd take Thea home to get changed before I'd do it on a library table, but it would probably depend on how bad the mess was and how far from home we were. (I don't have a car.)

Dunno if any of that would apply to the folks you've seen. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Yeah, it's really impossible to change diapers in the bathroom, so I don't really blame her (I figure, if you have 2-month-old twins, one of whom is screaming, you've got enough to deal with) -- it just came at a bad time. Which is to say, ten minutes after the library had already closed.

I can't count the times I found people changing their babies in the middle of the exhibit halls at the museum...

This is why us mama types scream for more child-friendly spaces, or at least a good changing table in the bathroom. :) We act unembarrassed when we do stuff like change kids in a museum because it's either act nonchalant or freak out. Also, freaking out makes the kids freak out.
