owlectomyI am being very lazy today.
My department had its annual book sale over the last couple days; I convinced myself to stay away yesterday, but today managed to score a Mabinogion for a dollar.
I am attempting to force myself through Christopher Paolini's Eragon. It's been criticized for ripping off Tolkien (linguistically, this is true), but... so far we've got a farmboy raised by his aunt and uncle, dead mother, father presumed dead or missing, in an Empire controlled by an evil guy. Said evil guy used to be a member of a mystical warrior sect--a particularly talented and ambitious member--but circumstances turned him evil, whereupon he set out to destroy the mystical warrior sect, and has presumably succeeded. Ah, but it turns out that farmboy is destined to become a new member of the mystical warrior sect! And he gets an old guy mentor to help him who he thought was just an old coot but turns out to have some kind of cool mysterious past!
Come on. I know Star Wars wasn't exactly original, but if you're going to rip something off, maybe try ripping off a movie that the entire world hasn't seen yet?
