14/3/13 11:27I liked this interview with Neal Pollack on how he got seduced by a future that never materialized -- I can definitely relate to the experience of feeling like "Oh wow, I'm getting reviewed in the New York Times, oh wow, people are paying attention to me, I guess things are going to work out for me from now on" and -- not having the experience to detach from that and, you know, refrain from counting my chickens.
But I'm lucky in that I've been hearing, pretty much since I started writing seriously, If you get a good advance you have to save it, and treat it like you won't ever get another one.
