I liked this interview with Neal Pollack on how he got seduced by a future that never materialized -- I can definitely relate to the experience of feeling like "Oh wow, I'm getting reviewed in the New York Times, oh wow, people are paying attention to me, I guess things are going to work out for me from now on" and -- not having the experience to detach from that and, you know, refrain from counting my chickens.

But I'm lucky in that I've been hearing, pretty much since I started writing seriously, If you get a good advance you have to save it, and treat it like you won't ever get another one.

I think every writer feels like they might hit it big. And why not? They might. (Most of us don't, but you never know who will.) Those dreams are fun to have--as long as we bank the advance while having them. ;-)

Thanks for that link!
