We have consistently paid our electric bills since we moved in. Not to the landlord, but directly to the electric company.

The property management company, however, has not paid their electric bill.

To the tune of over $400.

They're going to shut off our electricity if it doesn't get paid in the next two weeks.

There is much cursing.

I think they had to change some kind of rule here so that in this case people's utility couldn't be shut off, because it's become so commonplace.

This happened to me when I was living on 129th street. We got notices about that once or twice. We were on the seventh floor, so no elevator would have been trouble. Fortunately, they paid the bill each time.

If you can, check to see if all electricity in the building is going to be turned off, or just the common areas (hallways, etc). On 129th it was just going to be the public areas. By the sound of the amount, they must just be paying for hallways/ garbage area. Yes, hallways having no lighting would be bad, but not as bad as having no electricity at all. And- you know this, but- the property management company deserves all the cursing you are doing, so go at it!

It's just the common areas. Oh, thank goodness! Perhaps Diana panicked and didn't read the notice super closely, I got the impression that it would be everything. Thanks so much for your input. Landlords suck. I've got enough money to buy a place in Detroit....

whew. I was worried it would be the whole building, and didn't want to give you any wrong information. Landlords do suck! Good luck with them!
