One of the most unfortunate tropes of science fiction dystopia is that the Protagonist alone is strong-hearted and clever enough to see through society's brainwashing. It leads to the assumption that ... being affected by the prejudices and assumptions of your society amounts to an admission that you are not, in fact, clever and strong-hearted. You're one of the Sheep, not one of the Smart People.

This is as dumb as the spy cliche where James Bond is able to resist the truth serum or the tranquilizer out of sheer force of will.
