The Current Racism Discussion just went up at Metafilter. (Metafilter: we know more about quantum mechanics than about women!)
I predict massive fail in 3...2...1...

20/1/09 13:16 (UTC)"Should Elizabeth Bear get her works approved by Avalon's Willow and Deepa D from now on?"
Really? I mean, REALLY? Is anyone asking for that? Or are they generally asking for more representation of characters of color, portrayed in a non-stereotyped way, and a whole lot more representation of writers of color, so that the only characters of color out there aren't the ones written by white authors? I think most people know that when an author writes and publishes something, it is open for criticism (Twilight fans, of course, excluded). And sometimes that criticism is 'I thought it wasn't very good', but sometimes that criticism is "I thought it was a little bit (or more) racist'. You aren't going to agree with every critic, no one's saying you have to, but it often behooves you to look at where they're coming from.
I went to see a comedy troupe last week with three people who all thought they were hilarious. I thought their act was wildly misogynistic. Now, I might just not have been getting the joke- I'm sure they would have said it was a criticism of 'society' rather than a criticism of women (though 95% of who they were criticizing happened to be women). They, I'm sure, didn't intend any misogyny. But that doesn't mean it's not there, and it doesn't mean it doesn't deserved to be called out on it.
(though I'm not going to be the one to do it.)
(though maybe I should be.)

20/1/09 15:04 (UTC)It's tired. It's just so tired. It's people claiming that it's impossible, just because they can't be bothered to try.
