O tempora, o mores: I don't seem to be quite as traumatized by Tender Morsels as everyone else on adbooks. I mean, yeah, rape and incest and teen pregnancy, but not quite written out as fully dramatized scenes, not quite described head-on; Margo Lanagan writes so that you have to pay attention just to understand what's going on. My expectations were adjusted by what I knew of Margo Lanagan's writing, and what I knew of non-sanitized versions of fairy tales, I guess. But it makes me feel like one of those Young People who's been fully desensitized by Quentin Tarantino and a murder every three minutes on prime-time TV.

(I'm not.)

(But Kill Bill was pretty great.)

Chopped apples simmered in melted butter, sugar, and a splash of Amaretto. Oh, actually, I ate all of those and just left the dregs of the resulting apple-syrup out for the gnomes.
