Shizuoka Translation
3/3/08 20:231000 / 6000-ish, in a very rough kind of draft.
I love it when there's a sentence that absolutely will not let itself be parsed, and you keep reading it and you keep reading it and finally it pops into focus - but you're left with that shadow of a surrealistic and very wrong interpretation. So I'm glad I decided to do "First, Small Round Things" and not that historical Shiba Ryoutarou thing which has a million obscure-to-me words. And, actually, I'm glad that I can still get that sense of utter weirdness reading Japanese, though I'm irritated at the same time.
If my experience is anything to go by (and I've requested the materials packet every two years since ~2000, not that I've ever finished one yet), they always choose three texts that have exactly one point of major difficulty. I am hoping that the very weird subjectless, referrent-less sentences are the hard part about this one (I don't even know if it's written in 1st or 3rd person yet! Does that mean I have to decide?) - since I seem to have a handle on those, now that that first sentence popped into focus.
