My Bad Idea Bears know better than to tempt me with sex or drugs.

No. They said, "Performance Bike is having a 20% off sale!"

I am so good about going to the bike store and not coming home with a new bike. I may come home with a pump, tire levers, a new tube, a jersey, a cycling computer, a water bottle, a water bottle cage, or any number of other accessories, but I have always resisted buying a new bike.

Why? Well, for one thing, bike manufacturers tend to assume that you want a cruiser (no; too many hills), or a road bike optimized for going fast (no; no low gears, and not sturdy enough) or a mountain bike (no; don't ride on mountains). I wanted a touring bike. Touring bikes are for traveling, camping, and taking long leisurely road rides. They were faddish in the 70s and fell out of style thereafter. Cannondale kept making a touring bike (too expensive); so did Trek (not enough low gears); and so did some custom manufacturers that I drooled over but really really couldn't afford. REI's looked pretty good. So did Fuji's. But they were still a lot of money.

So... you know how this story ends.

She is bronze, and has 27 speeds, and she is mine.... Now I just have to deaccessorize my old one so I can put on a water bottle cage, pump, etc.
