Kevin Henkes may be my second-favorite picture-book author. (Is my favorite Chris Raschka? I'm going to go with.... yes.) He has a keen knowledge of human nature, even if his characters all happen to be mice.

And especially, there's Lilly. Lilly has an intense need for approval from authority figures, and a rich and vivid fantasy life, and is easily crushed when those things bump up against reality. That doesn't remind you of anyone you know, right? Right?
