Car: runs on a nonrenewable, polluting resource that comes from politically sensitive areas.
Bike: runs on cheeseburgers and milkshakes.

Car: total repair cost $2000 since I've owned it.
Bike: total repair cost $20 since I've owned it. [Okay, if you count the bike wrench & tire levers, etc., you might push it up to $100. And I need to have my derailleur adjusted and my wheel trued. But I've never paid to have it serviced].

Car: has no air-conditioning.
Bike: has built-in air-conditioning. It's called the wind.

Car: makes me go "Argh!"
Bike: makes me go "Whee!"

Yet I still don't think I could make it work biking to/from work. I can't see how I could leave work at 8:30, bike seven or eight miles, haul the bike downstairs, put it up on the rack, and still have energy to make supper, never mind shower.

7 or 8 miles would be quite a trip... I guess after you'd done it for a while you'd get used to it (& imagine how kickass your legs would be!!!), but yeah... the getting used to it part would suck--especially during summer!

The distance is not so bad-- it's riding at night when it's dark out and I'm hungry and tired that really makes me nervous.

But, thinking about it, there's no reason I couldn't ride my bike when I work a half-day and get off at 2:00. I should try out the route and see how it is.

Oh! Darkness! Yes, that would be not so fun. I totally didn't even think about that--I guess I have finally become one of those New Yorkers or something, in terms of forgetting that Not Everything Is Like Here. Ugh, I hope not, but yeah, I forgot that not everyplace would have copious streetlights & all (not that they do here, anyway).
