I finally finished a book in Japanese! (It's been, oh, just about a year, I think. I am not so good in the follow-through department.) Keritai Senaka ('A back I want to kick,' and yes, she means that literally) by Wataya Risa. It's like if "Fanboy and Goth Girl" were a Japanese literary novel -- otaku meets loner, they form a highly dysfunctional quasi-friendship. Certainly better than the real "Fanboy And Goth Girl." The book isn't weighed down by the YA-novel expectation that people Learn Important Things; it has no need to either conform to that expectation or rebel against it, while "Fanboy and Goth Girl" tries to do both at once.
