Happy new year, everyone!

For the second year B. and I made a Japanese-fusion-themed New Year's dinner; she's vegetarian and her mother is allergic to gluten, so that makes Japanese food a pretty good fit if you replace all the dashi with veggie stock and make sure to use gluten-free soy sauce.

Recipes:

-Inari sushi
-Tamago sushi
-Mushroom "sushi" (dried mushrooms, rehydrated, stuffed with sushi rice)
-Rabbit apples

-Onigiri (w/ seaweed, egg, and plum furikake)
-Potato croquettes
-Soba and harusame noodles with dipping sauce
-Asparagus salad with miso-sesame dressing

-Green tea creme brulee
-Strawberry mochi
-Meringue pigs

Notes: everything was really good, except that I didn't try the inari sushi because I didn't like it when I tried it last. Meaghan: the meringues actually turned out excellent. Good job! (Meaghan helped us make the meringues, which looked deflated and hopeless for quite some time, and gave them only a 30% chance of success, but she whipped them and whipped them, and they turned out fine). We drew pig faces on the meringues because it is the year of the boar, and they were very cute. Mochi was better than the last time I tried it, too. And the creme brulee? Really, cream plus tea plus sugar plus fire means, how can you go wrong?

Drinks:

-Shochu
-Sake (Momokawa Pearl)
-Iced and hot green tea
-"Green Geisha" (iced tea with shochu)
-"Soda Shogun" (shochu with root bear, coke, or ginger ale)
-"Meiji Melon" (shochu with melon soda.)

Notes: Shochu with melon soda is REALLY GOOD. But still way too strong for me. The sake had the color of watered-down coconut milk and was, ah, not universally liked. It was a bit strong. Sweet, but strong. I would not necessarily get the same kind next time.

All the work, and the trip to Toyo Shokuhin, with the getting lost because of one very stupid exit, was very worth it.
