Dismally, I checked Duke's catalog to see whether my lost book was still checked out to them.

It wasn't.

I looked on my "these books are due soon" e-mail. It wasn't there.

I don't have a clue how my book got back to where it was supposed to be, but I can only think that some extremely kind soul must have driven all the way to Durham on my behalf--and most of the people who come to my library don't have the time and money for that to be a simple thing.

I could really use the $125 and the embarrassment that this saved me, but it's not just that. It's the remarkable kindness implicit in such an action.

(Oh. Hm. Today's the last day to get 30% off at Borders, which means... that Doctor Who boxed set is mine, unless I decide I'd rather have some new books from Kinokuniya after all...)

Random acts of kindness, yes. If it makes you feel better, only someone who was already driving to Durham is likely to have taken the book there. Otherwise wouldn't they just have said something to a staff? 'But this isn't mine...'
