This is pretty nifty. It combines census data with Google Maps!

Current, 1-mile radius

Median income $32,342; Median age 28.6; 5889 white, 1395 black, 1251 hispanic; median housing cost $153,000; median rent, $582; Average vehicles per household, 1.3

(I should note that I'm using medians because they give you a much better idea of the 'true' average when there are a few very rich outliers, as is of course the case in a my yuppie-hippie-hispanic neighborhood).

Parents' neighborhood

Median income $92,448; median age 34.5; 3390 white, 272 black, 91 hispanic; median housing cost $205,630; median rent $1159; Average vehicles per household, 2.1

It's just numbers, but I think it gives you a pretty good idea why I like not living there any more.

My neighborhood...

This thing's cool!

My neighborhood, 1 mile radius:

Median income: $20,974 (goes up to $35,000! when changed from 1 mile radius to 3 mile radius)
Median age: 32.2
27,746 white, 117,919 black, 63,049 hispanic; median housing cost $154, 962, median rent $449; average vehicles per household, 0.2.

Very interesting...

These are figures from 2000, so I don't know how accurate they are to 2005. The area's been gentrifying like crazy over the past 5 years. I imagine the median rent and median housing cost are both much higher, although I don't think the racial demographics of the area have changed that much. I also don't think the median income's changed that much, although it might be a little higher.
