* Today I mainlined the last couple episodes of the J-drama "Magerarenai Onna" (I've seen the title translated as "The Unbendable Woman," which is not quite literal but conveys a lot of the spirit of it).
The heroine, Saki, is 32 years old and is studying for her tenth try at passing the bar exam, in honor of her father who took the bar exam nine times and passed on the tenth try. And when he went to tell Little Saki that he passed, he saw a baby carriage falling down a flight of stairs! And he stopped the baby carriage, but tripped and fell down the stairs himself and died in front of his daughter!
Saki has been having problems with the guy on the floor above her, who has recently dropped out of college and is being generally a bad neighbor (loud parties! Yelling at his mother! NOT SORTING HIS GARBAGE!). Until, one day, it is revealed... he's the baby Saki's father rescued when he caught the falling baby carriage! And he decides to change his ways because his life was precious after all.
Ridiculousness aside it's actually a really good series, and the three main characters are all weird but adorable in their own ways. My favorite might be Riko, who at first glance is a stereotype of a certain kind of brand-obsessed shallow housewife but is really running away from a family that seems to be trying to shut her out.
*I finished Avatar! I don't know if I have any deep thoughts about it. I just love everybody. That is all.
*I am reading less since I've moved, to my own consternation. Reverse commute on the L train meant I was guaranteed a seat; now I take two buses which are often both crowded.
*Plane tickets purchased for going to Raleigh in September. THAT IS REALLY SOON OH NO SHOES.
