Bloomberg administration, zealous about the war on obesity, feeds schoolchildren less food than required.
There are a lot of kids in New York who experience food insecurity. I am all for better food in schools, but let's not forget that not everybody is getting enough to eat for breakfast and dinner. Or that it's hard to concentrate on schoolwork when you're really hungry.
(I don't know about NYC, but I've heard of schools in North Carolina being crowded enough that the first lunch was at 10:30. If you're going to eat at 10:30 and not again until mid-to-late afternoon... a good-sized lunch is a good thing.)

4/9/12 23:53 (UTC)I say this not to be all HDU POST OLD NEWS but to point out that this has been going on for at least a year, in NY and in at least one other state, because some people are so terrified of children potentially being fat that they will literally starve them (fucking up their bodies, brains, immune systems, and metabolism) because emaciation is apparently better than fat.

5/9/12 15:20 (UTC)I know that a lot of the schools around here give the kids a total of 15 min. for lunch, which basically means you don't have time to eat unless you bring from home. I'm not exactly sure how that's supposed to work for the kids on school lunch. :-(
