20/8/13 18:54I am having a bad year for reading books that everyone else loves and I either (a) find meh from a storytelling or prose standpoint, or (b) find intensely problematic in some respect, which is not to say that I only like books which I can consider to be ideologically pure, but I do think "are we telling teenagers things about the world that are true and helpful" is a legitimate lens to examine books through.
This should make things interesting come October, when it's time for Committee to meet. Maybe I'll try to restrict myself to one "Actually I think it's kind of awful"?
Anyway, maybe it's time to retire "GSM character subjected to horrible violence so that straight cis character can learn a positive life lesson" as a book premise?
