If I really wanted to, it would be totally feasible for me to take the bus up to Englewood Cliffs, NJ, which is the nearest place that offers the Kanji Kentei exam.
...But the round trip is almost four hours, on a bus, through New Jersey, so it wouldn't be worth it just to do level 5 (which tests you on the ~1000 characters that you should learn by the end of elementary school). If I were going to do level 2, that would be another story.
(Level 1? Level 1 tests you on 6000 characters. I'm pretty sure that is not ever going to happen.)
