Spent the evening TPR-ing it at the local Japanese meetup. TPR--Total Physical Response--is a language learning method based on the idea that:
-When we learn languages as small children, we learn to understand and obey commands before we're able to produce complete sentences of our own;
-We learn language when we have comprehensible input, and one way of making sure input is comprehensible is to ask people to carry out instructions;
-Physical commands are also a way of starting at a very basic beginning level without using English.
So the idea behind this is that you give commands, and your students obey your commands. This is fun! The other people there were willing to be used as my guinea pigs, and they enjoyed it.
And for my next trick, I have a computer basics class tomorrow morning...
