3/8/07 23:13Sometimes I forget I live in the south.
It was 97 today, so it's hard to forget completely. But although I feel like I live in an outpost of consumeristic suburbia, I don't feel like I live in a red state.
I'm not in high school. Jesse Helms is not dead yet--perhaps God doesn't want anything to do with him--but he has retired. And while the people who come to the library are mostly conservative and religious folk, they do not randomly comment on the awfulness of liberals while checking out their books. (This has happened to me. Different library.)
I was spoiled, living in Carrboro. I got used to the idea that even in the south, surely the universities are bastions of diversity and progressive thought. Well, as long as you discount Liberty University and such.
I'm wrong, and I'm mad about being wrong. This is my backyard. This is a mile from my apartment. These are... well, obviously they're the people I went to high school with, and obviously they still do not have the sense they were born with.
Well. The good thing about North Carolina is, you get to make rude and stupid jokes at the expense of whatever university you hate, and everyone will think it's perfectly normal...
