Emily Gravett wrote a picture book in which there is a duck knitting a very long scarf! <3 <3 <3 <3 (Also: nontraditional families, plus the usual Emily Gravett dark humor, and a satisfying denoument.)

Apparently this came out in 2009 and I did not know until now. It's hard enough keeping up with YA new releases without keeping up with books for younger children too. Nevertheless, I am sad I did not know about this book till now!
