I think this is a pretty mediocre list and most of the Tolkien-imitator long-series high fantasy has no place on it. You'll note I haven't actually read most of it, so I'm not in a position to divide the ones that belong from the ones that don't. 

Most of these that I've read, I read when I was a teenager and thought I had something to prove by reading classic SF. I think my tastes are not well-aligned with the mainstream. :\

Yeah, I mean...really? The Kingkiller Chronicle? *eyeroll* One Willis book? No g-d Tiptree?!

No Octavia Butler either. I've been reading Jo Walton's Hugo retrospective posts on Tor.com, and this is the thing that gets to me -- she never won a Hugo for best novel, she won a Nebula for best novel but after she'd been writing major novels for 15 years already. In most years where she had major novels come out, she was completely overlooked while crap made it onto the ballot.

I can sort of understand the omission of Tiptree because I think her shorter work is so much more influential than her novels and short story collections have an uphill battle in polls like these because nobody reads them. But it's a very guy-heavy list and I doubt most of the 21st-century entries are going to stand the test of time.

I think the majority of the ones i've read were read in my teens and because either (1) they were what I had access access to (school libraries, cheap scholastics sets/ my parents buying them because theu were Important SFF and they didn't read it but knew I liked SFF-not that i'm remotely ungrateful) or (2) when I almost indiscriminately read mostly high fantasy and romance novels in high school, some before that.
