I am watching Mimi wo sumaseba / Whisper of the Heart.

For frame of reference, Totoro gets me all weepy.

Why oh why did no one warn me.

It's not even a depressing movie! Nobody dies, nothing horrible happens -- it's just this raw experience of pure adolescent longing. I'd say I recommend it, but once you see it you're going to think I'm a total wimp for weeping all the way through it.

If you can get your hands on that book I mentioned, "The Gift" by Lewis Hyde... it's one of the oddest books I've read, part anthropology and part philosophy, but it deals in a really deep way with what it means to create art in a culture where everything is monetized, and it's a book that's had a big impact on me.

It is a wonderful wonderful movie, and I'm so glad that I saw it (and it's really interesting to compare its treatment of romance with the Miyazaki movies), but I'm really glad I decided to watch it at home instead of trying to watch it before WisCon at your place. An hour of weeping can be... awkward...
