1) You have just proposed a whole new reason for risking the integrity of the universe through time travel.

2) This is better science fiction than what frequently wins the Nebula.

The twist ending is that it's already happening... but it's the wrong side that's winning.

Yeah, that was my reality check on "No, it's not just me, it REALLY IS this bad." Because I'm not super well-read in adult SF stuff, but I read enough to know that Who Fears Death should beat the Connie Willis books at Nebula-winning, chess, tic-tac-toe, Mortal Kombat, and any other battle of wits.
