For me, it's about the prose, not about whether author is having some wish fulfillment thought hir book. I don't care what the author's personal RL wishes are or whether hir book fulfills or addresses them; I only care whether the prose smacks of that, in a way that rises above the other elements of the book and smacks me in the face with obviousness.
