Is it high? I somehow have the sense that it shouldn't be, but I don't actually have any real experience/knowledge to back this up with.
On the other hand, I'm just starting to look into apartments in Honolulu, and goddamn but rents are high there. I mean, I knew they were, I'd been told they were, but hadn't seen any actual numbers before.
The rents are considerably lower (when I lived in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, I got comfortably-sized one-bedrooms for $650-700) but that's counterbalanced by the need for everyone in the household to have a car; there's no public transit, you can't walk to anything, and everything is so spread out that the logistics of driving one person to soccer practice and the other person to piano lessons and the other person home from work are painful.
Once you add up car prices, repair costs, gas, and insurance, I think Raleigh is pretty even with New York in terms of cost of living.
