owlectomy-Moving! I'm going to set a target date of December or January for that; I want to be sure that I find an apartment I like and can stay in for the next three or four years. I'm still a little worried about finding a place because my salary by itself is not quite enough for me to rent in the price range I'm looking at. (I have a guaranteed raise that should hit sometime between March and June, and savings/book advance can comfortably tide me over till then, but I can't stay in this place until March. I CAN'T.) Landlords here are really picky about checking out your credit/income/job situation, and I can't blame them, but it may mean I get passed over for apartments I could afford.
-Totally Sweet Ninja Death Squad: out in spring of 2010! That is pretty close to what I was expecting. This is maybe enough time for me to get used to the idea.
-Book tour: also spring of 2010! I am not sure yet if the publisher will be paying for anything or if I'm funding it myself, but there are some independent bookstores I'm really fond of in Raleigh/Durham, and I would be thrilled if I could go to Livres Babar in Pointe Claire - it's maybe half a mile from the house where I grew up, and I have such fond memories of walking there when I was in fifth grade and buying Julie of the Wolves, and spending all day reading it on the tire swing in the park.
-Totally Sweet Trip to Japan: maybe October of 2010? I would really rather go before then, but if I spend all my vacation days on the book tour that's going to be the earliest I can go...and I need to renew my passport.
-Wiscon: I certainly hope to get out there in 2009 and 2010. In fact, maybe I should go ahead and start making reservations for this year...
Longer-term, I am beginning to consider Canada again. I feel very uncertain about the political situation down here (though more optimistic than I have in a long time!) and the less said about the economy, the better. Montreal is a fantastic city, slower-paced than New York and not as expensive, and - if my job didn't require me to speak French, I could probably live there. So, if it were to become possible for me to write full-time... well, in the U.S. I'd have to pay through the nose for health insurance, and in Canada I wouldn't.
But that's the distant future. For now I'm happy to wait and see how things shake out.

25/9/08 15:00 (UTC)I worked there for five years. :) I worked so many author signings, Gordon Korman's being the one that totally tongue-tied me. If you did an appearance there that would completely and totally rock.
Did the downtown branch open before you moved out of Montreal? They took over the Double Hook's location when Judy closed.

I'm taking next week to mull more :)

25/9/08 21:45 (UTC)There are a few pluses and minuses - we could definitely get a nicer place together than separately, and as long as you don't believe in the trash fairy and the dishes fairy we'd probably get along just fine. And in some ways it's nicer to live with a roommate because you have someone who can get you orange juice when you have the flu.
Minuses: it would be hard to find a place that was a convenient commute for both of us. There are a couple neighborhoods that might work - and I have an acquaintance who commutes from Park Slope to Canarsie, so maybe it's not *that* bad. And also, my need for silence when I'm writing is not necessarily compatible with actual human beings. ^_^
Anyway, let's continue to mull and search Craigslist obsessively (or is that just me?) and see what happens.
