You can keep moving the goalposts forever, hoping that the next achievement will be enough validation.

I hear you. Every time someone asks for an interview or a personal appearance -- heck, every time I publish another one -- I start panicking because surely this time someone will call me on it all, and see, I knew I wasn't really a valid pretty-much-everything.

My current goalposts? Having the fiction accepted. Because then I'll be a Real Writer, since obviously the past five non-fic books I've written for my publisher Don't Count. *facepalm*
