The new Kindle supports Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts.

MY EYES HAVE GONE ALL SPARKLY.

Now it just remains to be seen whether the Japanese publishers will get on the bandwagon and whether books are going to be region-locked if they do.

Get on it, people. This is the future I have been waiting for! That and really fast trains, but on the other hand if I get really fast trains where will I find time to read my ebooks?

Woo!

I somehow get the feeling that Japanese publishers won't be jumping on the bandwagon too soon... You might know better than I, being in the library world and all that, but I feel that overall, Japanese publishing is way behind the curve when it comes to electronic and online formats and such. (take for example the relative lack of Japanese-language scholarly articles online as compared to the wonders of JSTOR)

Still, this is a huge step towards making it feasible.

I hope your suspicions about region-locking are unfounded. That would be so asinine if they region-locked *books*.

Even without region locking, I could easily imagine a situation like with the iTunes store where you can't buy music from the Japanese iTunes store without a Japanese credit card and a Japanese address. There are workarounds available, but it's a frustrating thing to come up against in a supposedly global economy.

A most frustrating thing indeed.
