I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind last night (Yes, I have finals. Yes, I'm sick. Shut up). It was quite simply excellent. I don't have the same ambivalence for it that I have for Being John Malkovich or Adaptation (both of which I thought were extremely clever, but cruel, and touched my head more than my heart); it grabbed at my heart. In the midst of all its weirdness it managed to be very real, very earnest, hopeful about love in the midst of having every reason not to hope. It didn't descend into cruelty or sappiness, though the line between them was at times razor-thin. I don't see very many movies, but it's been a long time since a movie made me quite as happy as this one did.

Oh, and I think I aced my Japanese final. One down, two to go!
