Have just passed 9000 words in Skritter, the SRS I've been using for Chinese. There have been studies showing that at least for English, 8000-9000 word families is sufficient to read most general-audience text with about 98% comprehension; I'm definitely not there yet with Chinese, but I'm not sure whether that's due to having learned a lot of quite rare words or just needing more volume overall.

Anyway, my point, is, just because I can't resist a meme:
My power level: IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAND!
