Soooo I went out to buy a birthday present. And I ended up in Kinokuniya, mostly because I started being sad about my book, and then some charity solicitor on the street told me to smile, and then I felt worse, and... yeah. Kinokuniya. Where they had
1) Mameshiba stickers!!! Mameshiba is my current favorite Japanese character mascot. It's a cross between a bean and a dog and it likes to tell you random trivia at all times (which is my annoying habit). Also I love to buy stickers to put in my music books to mark off the pieces I've worked on and gotten good enough at.
2) The new issue of Yom Yom, my favorite Japanese magazine, which has stories and light essays and also cartoons of pandas. And... it has a new story by Mori Eto, who is so great. BUT ALSO. A dialogue between Hagio Moto and Uehashi Nahoko (the author of Moribito) talking about science fiction in Japan and Hagio as a pioneer of Japanese SF.
So... I went out to buy a birthday present and just bought stuff for myself. But hey, it's my birthday in 2 weeks too, right?
(Confidential to Meaghan: still taking suggestions!)
