I never did manage to get Linux Mint back on my computer, but eventually I discovered that the distribution Mint is based on, Ubuntu, is available as a file that you can set up as a bootable USB drive without too much wrangling, and now AT LAST I have vanquished MIE.

In the process of setting this up, I discovered something. My netbook has only ("only," hah!) 20 GB of hard drive space. MIE took up TWELVE of those GB. Ubuntu Netbook Remix? 2.4 GB. I need those GB to do other things, thanks very much.

I swear, everything I've ever learned about computers has been after midnight with a headache and a total inability to give up.

So, yeah. I'm moving.

I'm going to wait till the beginning of October to start looking in earnest for a room, but I've been looking on Craigslist and I'm cautiously optimistic. I just don't want to get back in a situation where I'm awake till after midnight every night, or dealing with other people's smoke and trash and (my) unwashed dishes all the time. And I'm not cool enough for all these bohemian Williamsburg people. OTOH it IS the start of the school year and I'll bet that the students are skewing the sample. (Unfortunately, because I work way out in Canarsie, I'm pretty limited as to what neighborhoods have a reasonable commute there.)

I have a bookcase that won't survive another move. I'm surprised it's lasted this long. That will need to be replaced.

Moving is so utterly daunting.

I just want to live in one place, and keep my books, and write my novel.
