An auspicious start to the storytime season; I'll be doing three a week for the next nine weeks, so I was hoping for some reason to believe it would go all right. I'm doing twilight storytimes on Mondays for working parents, and also in the hope that it might attract a curious person or two using the computers. Or chase them away. Either way. We had one infant and two members of the Cute Brigade, all second-generation immigrants (so I'm glad I did "The Cow That Oinked," although I probably won't do it again except for twos and threes; it is silly and has a Good Message About Bilingualism, but not as much story-ness as I'd have liked).

The bad news is that one of the day cares we had been doing storytimes for has, unexpectedly, shut down.

I keep switching my genders around on the barnyard animals. When I'm consciously thinking about it, I'm aware that about 95% of animals in stories are male, and I shouldn't reinforce the trend; but when I'm in the midst of storytime and have all my attention focused on other things, I'll default to 'he.' I should plan better. But, you know? I do storytimes for religious day cares. I plan my storytimes accordingly. So a wee bit of accidental subversion where I can get it isn't necessarily such a bad thing.

My performance anxiety is not too bad. I'm reaching the point that I had reached by the end of my storytelling class, where I get jangly and fragile for the thirty minutes beforehand, but once I actually sit down and start my stories I'm calm and happy as long as nothing else goes wrong. It's not quite a flow-state because I still get self-conscious when I'm doing the hokey-pokey, but it's nice. (You'd think the skills would transfer from storytelling, but they don't, quite; storytelling is harder than storytime to do well, but easier to do at a basic level if you're the kind of person who gets self-conscious about doing the hokey-pokey.)
