My weekly linguablog browsing led me to this (just slightly old) commentary on the new radiation symbol. See, the reason we need a new radiation symbol is that radiation's going to stick around for an awfully long time, long enough for cultures to rise and fall and rise again, and the current trefoil is widely recognized, but it isn't very intuitive. It's a difficult problem to solve, because 'ionizing radiation' is not a concept that's easy to draw as stick figures, and what they came up with is perfectly reasonable... yet also hilariously prone to misinterpretation.
