(Heroine's Name) left her small town of (quaint name) after (a tragedy or inconvenience) and has become stunningly successful in her new career of (something financial, or international, or if you can make it something all Lib'rul like war journalism so much the better). However, despite her great success, Something Is Missing! She returns to (quaint name) after (another tragedy or inconvenience) and begins to realize what she is missing: God, and a man! In steps her old acquaintance (Hero's Name), who has a job as (something Manly, like firefighter) and (a child or pet), and who reawakens all her, you know, nurturing genes and stuff. Will she realize that she should get back in the kitchen and make him (something you can eat or drink), or go back to her godless heathen job?

Also at ALA Midwinter, in addition to the Newberys (such fun! I think I might make it to Midwinter next year!):

"Resolved, that the American Library Association-Allied Professional Association endorses a minimum salary for professional librarians of not less than $40,000 per year; and, be it further Resolved, that the details of this endorsement shall be published and otherwise disseminated by the Director of the ALA Allied Professional Association as appropriate."

Ehh. It's only symbolic, and if it weren't symbolic it would be a little dumb--there are lots of rural libraries that don't have much money in the budget but also don't have a huge cost of living. And there are urban libraries that have a much higher cost of living. It would be nice if the NYC system raised their starting salary to 40K, I'll admit.

But I really don't have a problem with that kind of starting salary for a no-experience fresh-out-of-school librarian. I don't think I deserve to be making much more than my current salary. The big problem with librarian salaries is the room for improvement, or lack thereof, in the middle range: librarians with ten or twenty years experience who aren't making the big management bucks. They're the ones the ALA-APA should be worrying about.
