Indulgences--

Flannel sheets.
New pillows.
Garlic and ginger.
Shrimp shumai. I am now a mere 15 minutes from the Toyo Shokuhin! They sell huge hunks of octopus (which I will mention to the librarian in charge of next month's Food Fear Factor) and all manner of Japanese food and they give me free stuff even when I only spend $10. Now if I could find buns stuffed with meat I'd be all set.
New cookbook (Bittman's "How to Cook Everything") bought with my Christmas gift card.

It just occurred to me that I had the choice between curling up with Nikutai no Mon or A Drowned Maiden's Hair, and there's something that feels really self-indulgent about that, like strawberries in the middle of winter.

Things that I could live without--

Couples arguing in the grocery store about whether to spend $2 on lettuce.
Those shoes with roller skates in them that are very popular among the boys 6-10 set. Not in the library k thx.
People talking into their cell phone head sets at the same time that they're trying to ask me a question/check out books/ etc.
Cookbook authors assuming that their readers have blenders, mixers, and food processors.

Things I need to get and can't afford just now--
(to qualify 'can't afford,' these are mostly the sorts of things I'm putting off for a month--a year or so in the case of expensive kitchen gadgets-- so that I can buy them without getting into credit card debt that I can't pay off at the end of the month. I'm not really interested in getting cheap used stuff, because it really is a temporary situation, related to my having to buy furniture and all manner of other new-apartment stuff).

Vacuum.
Microwave.
A decent skillet, a decent knife.
Blender, mixer, food processor. Just a mixer would be nice.
Japanese test prep books.
Couch, or futon, or whatever for me to sit on while watching TV.
Blanket. In lieu of using the twin blanket on the queen bed.
Bookcases. One at least, perhaps two.
