8/11/06 05:08Yay election! Barring anything stunning happening while I'm asleep, I'm at least a little happy with the results.
In my own district, Brad Miller, the one who is SANE, beat the "Black Jesse Helms" (running on a campaign of xenophobia and homophobia) 64 to 36... 36 having been established as a rough estimate of the proportion of votes you can get just for being a republican (see also: Bush's approval rating).
I attach too much significance to political races, considering that (a) I can't vote and (b) moving to Canada is a viable option; it comes from moving to North Carolina, and becoming aware of politics, and becoming aware that Jesse Helms was my senator, all at roughly the same time. Which was in middle school. Meaning that every so often I succumb to the temptation to take this stupid culture-wars stuff seriously and see these things as being in some way about whether what I believe is...acceptable, I guess. Whether who I am is acceptable, living in a place where some of my views are really at the fringe end of the spectrum, and where many people know that Jesus is a Republican.
Oh well. Yay election!
