So I take one of my Duke library books to work--I always get there 20-30 minutes early, and I almost always bring something to read.
At the end of the day I am unable to find it.
I remain, a day later, unable to find it. It is still possible that it is somewhere in this very small library, but it is conspicuous enough that I have my doubts.
The other alternative--and it's not one that I really want to consider--is that, as I checked out a stack of books for someone, I accidentally put my own book under the stack.
I am holding on to the slim hope that, if this is discovered, the person I checked it out to will either return the book to Duke, or call Duke, or return it to our own library; it's bad enough that I might have to pay the replacement cost, but it would just be too embarrassing to try to explain the situation.
