Bookspoils
11/10/05 18:47My book run through midtown was not an entirely successful one. I arrived at Book-Off only to find that their phone lines had been cut and they couldn't take credit cards (and I could not therefore buy the Yellow Monkey CD that I so wanted); it was Columbus day, so half of Fifth Ave was closed off for the parade, and I couldn't find my way to Kinokuniya; I arrived at Asahiya before it opened, and walked on by because I'd spent too much money anyway.
Koori no Mamono no Monogatari, #21. (The Ice Cold Demon's Tale)
Meaghan will remember that I squeed and pointed at the artbook at Onna. It gets points with me for the art, and for being about a demon--but a good demon! This is one of those series that I cared about enough to want to read the ending--there are 23 volumes overall, so I thought this was close enough--even if I don't really care to read every single volume. However, there are too many characters, and the story gets way more complicated than it needs to be, so (especially given that I'm skipping a lot) I don't really get much more than the angst. But it's good angst.
Alas! The company's only selling manga to a limited number of stores now, and neither Amazon nor bk1 seem to stock the series, and they don't do direct sales overseas. I may have to resign myself to waiting a long long time to read the ending.
Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, because I was in the mood for some good fluffy shoujo. I haven't yet decided whether the premise, which is that a girl can pass for a guy at an all-male boarding school, requires disbelief to be hanged by the neck until dead rather than simply suspended--it's rather more believable than I thought it would be, which isn't saying much. The art is pretty, but it also strikes me as somewhat paint-by-number. Plus, manga have to be rather epic for me to tolerate them going on forever and ever--a 23-volume series is LONG.
Crystal Dragon, oldish Celtic shoujo fantasy. I purchased a volume of this some time ago and was fairly charmed, and it's recently out in bunko volumes, so I can be confident that I can collect the whole series if I want to. (Before, I quailed at the prospect of collecting all of it.)
Ouchou Haru no Yoi Romanse. I love me some Akizuki Kou. I love me some big silly hats. I don't intend to rationalize beyond that, except that there sure are a lot of words I don't know, and that's a good thing, right?
Japanese you should know as a matter of course. Entertaining little bits of etymology and phrase origins. I had to buy something that was good for me, after all, didn't I?
