Pursuant to a very productive conversation with a colleague, I have decided to set myself a challenge for 2012.

I am going to try to read every YA novel, poetry collection, or short story collection by an author of color that gets a starred review in either Kirkus or Horn Book. (Why those two? Well, I like them, and I can't keep up with all the starred reviews from all the journals, but I basically trust that something awesome won't slip past both of them.)

I don't know how realistic "every" is. If I don't succeed, well, I'll read a pretty good passel of books at any rate.

I don't think I'll write up reviews, partly because I'm such a persnickety reader. Maybe just for the ones I can recommend enthusiastically?

I am surprised to see people not talking about how white the field of Printz award contenders looks this year. I can't do anything about Real Printz -- I'm not even a member of ALA -- but for Mock Printz, at least, I can hope to bring more to the discussion.
