Five songs, One letter

[personal profile] sasha_feather gave me an F! Comment below if you would like a letter.

The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
If this song weren't so good, it would be overrated. But -- redemption, reconciliation, stumbling upon the great good things after all your options have run out. Is it any wonder I love it?

The White Stripes - Fell in Love With a Girl
I must be fine because my heart's still beating.
Sometimes you just need to dance around your apartment to a song with a great beat and some loud distorted guitars.

Wicked cast recording - For Good
This is one of those songs that makes me roll a Saving Throw Against Crying. It is rare to see stories that take friendship between women as seriously as they take romance. Wicked does, and I think it says something that the love song is one of the most boring songs in the musical, and this is one of the best.

The Arrogant Worms -- Forgive Us, We're Canadian
You too can be Canadian, if you follow this advice!

Belle and Sebastian -- Fox In the Snow
I need to hear this song every so often because it has things to tell me. My sister sent me the CD while I was in Japan and so far over my head studying classical Japanese and I needed to be told to take care of myself.
It's not as if they're paying you -- it's not as if it's fun, at least not anymore., and I stopped feeling guilty for all the manga translations that weren't getting done.

Thanks for sharing these! They look great and I am downloading. I think you have Fox in the snow on there twice though.

I love Fairytale of New York, and I love Belle & Sebastian! That song is great. My go-to is often The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner.

Oh, I totally agree. Nevertheless -- I won't advance a movie like Lethal Weapon or The Hangover as a shining example of Men Talking About Their Feelings or anything, but -- it's hard to think of even a mainstream film equivalent to those with women. Sex and the City, I guess.

Even if more screenwriters were women, I think there are certain assumptions in place about what The Audience (read: 16-35 years old and male) wants to see. And one of those assumptions is that women are interesting in a very small number of contexts: the Love Interest, the Token Girl On A Male Team, the Badass Action Hero (Look We Have A Strong Female Character!). And even a show like Avatar, which is very clear on Sexism Is Bad -- count the number of conversations Katara has with other women... I hear that there are actually regular female characters besides Katara in the second season, but so far it's surprisingly slim.
