Housing + transportation affordability

Yes, it's official -- once you take transportation costs into account, it's cheaper to live in (many sections of) New York than (many sections of) Raleigh.

(Nonetheless, I DO sometimes fantasize about being able to get my own apartment for $800 a month or so...)
