Cory Doctorow's recent post on the challenges of marketing books, from the self-published ones to the major-publisher-publicity-blitz ones, is well worth reading.

most books – even those that are deservedly well-loved by publishers, readers, and booksellers – make hardly a ripple on release and fade away to nothing before you know it.

The more time I spend in libraries, the more I know that to be true, but it doesn't make it easy to deal with. I think there is very little that does.
