Wiscon schedule

Fiber Circle
Fri, 1:00–3:45 pm
Sit with friends, or make some new ones. Bring your yarn, needles, thread, scissors, and beads. Create beauty, talk about science fiction or your craft (or both!).

Teamwork: How Anime and Manga Fill a Feminist Void in SF/F
Sat, 10:30–11:45 pm
Feminism is more than just a belief that women and men should be treated equally. At its core, it requests a change in power dynamics that allows all people to be equal. American SF/F frequently rewards solitary heroines and heroes, or portrays partners who happen to work side–by–side. In anime and manga, characters are constantly participating in cooperative training, teaching, and learning from one another. Are those characters more feminist?

What Is Feminist Romance?
Sun, 8:30–9:45 am
Romances in short stories and novels often follow traditional patriarchal rules, even when feminist individuals are writing. What does a feminist romantic storyline look like? Do we see these or are they rare? How can writers who consider themselves feminist avoid falling back on the old standbys?

The Works of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli
Sun, 2:30–3:45 pm
Films such as Ponyo, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke feature girls in lead roles, themes of taking care of nature and taking care of each other, spirituality, adventure, platonic love, and families. Characters tend to be realistic and flawed. Are there any problematic themes in these works?

It is a lot of panels! I'm very excited though.

I won't be at the sign-out this year since I don't actually have anything out yet. However, there's a chance that Love Story will be on shelves before June 10th, maybe even a tiny chance it will be out by WisCon, so anyone who wants to get something signed is more than welcome to hit me up after a panel or before a panel or as I'm wandering the halls. That sounds egotistical but whatever. I have a book coming out in a little more than a month; like a bride, you get a brief window of time in which you're allowed to pretend the universe revolves around you.

Also Karen Healey is having her launch party for her book Guardian of the Dead on Friday night and everybody should come! It's a great book, and it's going to be a great time.
